Have you been impacted by suicide? Do you have a desire to help others? Are you comfortable with listening to and supporting others?

If you are over 18 and have been bereaved for more than 2 years, you could help make a difference by becoming a volunteer on our Support Line.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS) is the leading charity providing peer-to-peer support for adults who have been bereaved or impacted by suicide. We believe that no one should face their loss alone, so we create safe spaces across the UK for people to share and process their grief.

We are seeking compassionate individuals to become trained volunteers to support others in their bereavement journey, through our telephone support service.

Who are we looking for?

• Over the age of 18.
• Bereaved by suicide over 2 years ago and confident in your own progress. The impacts of a death by suicide are far-reaching - this could have been a family member, friend, colleague, client, or even a stranger.
• Great active listening skills and telephone manner.
• Empathetic and passionate about supporting others.
• Respectful, sensitive, and non-judgmental approach to survivors.
• Has quiet, comfortable space at home for confidential conversations.

What would you do? Our Support Line is open seven days a week from 9am – 7pm and is supported by a team of volunteers who donate as much time as they feel comfortable giving. Typically, a shift on the rota is for an hour or two and most volunteers offer their time once or twice a week, so they can maintain a manageable and enjoyable balance between work, home, and volunteering.

Great Support Line volunteers do more active listening than talking, so you must be comfortable listening to the experiences of others. The survivors who use our service are always grateful that you are on the end of the phone to listen and talk to them at some of their darkest moments.

It's very important to us that you pay attention to your own well-being and be aware of your own boundaries – we want your volunteering experience to be safe and fulfilling in equal measure.

What do we provide?

• Robust training and a commitment to development.
• Annual volunteer assembly: talks, forums, guest speakers, celebrations, and socials.
• Peer support from over 400 other volunteers with regular opportunities to meet, share ideas, and receive support.
• Regular check ins & catch-up sessions with a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator for the support line, and our team in national office.
• Optional supervision and support from our partner, Suicide&co.
• Wellbeing retreats & activities including caravan stays.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide welcomes people of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities. We are committed to providing reasonable adjustments that enable volunteers with disabilities to access our opportunities.

As a telephone support volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting others bereaved by suicide and breaking the stigma around talking about our loss.
