QUALIFICATIONS: Any person employed as a teacher assistant, must hold one of the following credentials: temporary license, continuing certificate, or Level I, II, III or Para-Professional certificate. Since February 2, 2004, all teacher assistant candidates are required to take the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Tests (ATAS) unless the candidate took and achieved a qualifying score on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) which is a requirement for classroom teacher certification.
- Possess and maintain state and or federal certification
- High school diploma or GED
- Participate in professional learning opportunities as required
- Skill in the care and supervision of students
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to speak and write effectively
- Working knowledge of the school environment and the population it serves
- Awareness and ability to work successfully within a diverse population
- Working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects*
- Providing the teacher with information about pupils that will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
- Assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, and assisting in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
- Utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in areas such as: foreign language, arts, crafts, music and similar projects*
- Communicating effectively with the instructional team, including the classroom teacher, other professional staff and parents
- Attending to the physical needs of the students, as appropriate
- Assisting in related institutional work as required
