Senior Humanitarian Advisor

The position

The Senior Humanitarian Advisor at World Vision Australia (WVA) will provide policy and technical advice on humanitarian issues, build and maintain relationships for emergency affairs, and support market growth. The role involves contributing to project development, shaping external communications, and engaging with donors. Additionally, the advisor will help activate emergency responses, run a surge roster recruitment and training program and contribute to emergency affairs research.

Your role plays an integral part in the organisation, tackling global issues and supporting our mission to empower Australians to create meaningful change for the world’s most vulnerable.

Maximum Term Contract until End of April 2027.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical advisor on humanitarian policy and operations.
  • Act as a relationship focal point for WVA with WVI and external bodies.
  • Support emergency activation processes and acquisition efforts and contribute to emergency affairs leadership and internal communications.
  • Deploy for senior response management as needed.
  • Provide thought leadership on humanitarian and emergency affairs and lead or contribute to research and strategic relationships for market growth
  • Develop quality project concepts for funding.
  • Support high priority events and donor engagements.
  • Enhance WVA brand awareness and external communications.
  • Advise on policy to support WVA corporate affairs strategy.
  • Ensure timely and quality reporting for emergency affairs projects

Who we’re looking for

As the successful applicant, you will have a breadth of capabilities including the ability to see opportunities where others see obstacles and demonstrate a can-do attitude, creativity and a focus on solutions.

You will have:

  • In-depth knowledge of humanitarian principles, the emergency affairs cycle, and issues affecting humanitarian operations, especially in the Pacific.
  • Understanding of humanitarian coordination mechanisms and the international humanitarian system.
  • Expertise in financial and compliance management related to the international development sector in Australia.
  • Bachelor degree in International Development or Humanitarian related discipline.
  • Technical expertise in areas such as International Humanitarian Law (IHL), conflict sensitivity, access, safety, and protection.
  • Experience in researching humanitarian effectiveness and knowledge of the humanitarian donor landscape are desirable.
  • Familiarity with emerging models of partnering between NGOs and government/international organizations is also a plus.
