Referral and Authorization Coordinator

The Referral and Authorization Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring a seamless experience for patients and providers alike. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of pre-registration, registration, insurance verification, and pre-certification to guarantee that each patient’s information and authorizations are accurate before their appointment. Acting as a key liaison between patients, primary care offices, and insurance companies, this role ensures every visit begins with confidence and clarity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify patient benefits and obtain necessary referrals, authorizations, and precertifications for all ambulatory visits, procedures, injections, and radiology services.

  • Utilize web-based systems to confirm real-time insurance eligibility and update patient demographic and coverage details as needed.

  • Prepare and maintain patient charts daily to ensure a smooth and efficient check-in process.

  • Create and manage referrals, faxing forms to providers and insurance companies promptly.

  • Efficiently process 75–80 referrals per day while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Serve as a reliable resource for providers and support staff, addressing questions or updates regarding referral status, care coordination, and follow-up actions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional healthcare education a plus.

  • 2–3 years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in referrals, billing, or front desk operations.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build professional relationships with physicians, patients, and external partners.

  • Proven experience handling managed care insurance, including Medicaid and commercial plans, and a deep understanding of authorization and verification requirements.
