Role Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) – Data Platform to join arenaflex’s data infrastructure teams. This remote‑first position offers a competitive rate of $28 per hour and the flexibility to work from anywhere in the United States. As a key member of our data platform ecosystem, you will design, build, and operate large‑scale distributed systems that power the data‑driven decisions behind every recommendation, search, and playback experience. Your work will directly impact the ability of arenaflex’s microservices to ingest, process, and serve petabytes of data with sub‑millisecond latency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement highly available, fault‑tolerant distributed services that support real‑time data ingestion, storage, and retrieval across multiple data centers.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and other engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Develop and maintain robust data pipelines that move terabytes of streaming data through ETL processes, ensuring data quality and consistency.
  • Optimize query performance for large‑scale analytical workloads using technologies such as Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and Flink.
  • Contribute to arenaflex’s open‑source initiatives by publishing libraries, tools, and best‑practice documentation for the broader community.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations, incident response, and root‑cause analysis to maintain system reliability and uptime.
  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and champion best practices in software design, testing, and documentation.
  • Drive cross‑functional projects that align data platform capabilities with emerging product features, including interactive gaming and personalized content recommendations.

Essential Qualifications

  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data‑intensive applications.
  • Proficiency in Java or another object‑oriented programming language (e.g., Scala, Kotlin, C#).
  • Solid understanding of distributed computing concepts such as consensus algorithms, sharding, replication, and eventual consistency.
  • Experience designing and operating RESTful APIs and streaming services (e.g., gRPC, Kafka, Pulsar).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with relational and NoSQL data stores, including PostgreSQL, Cassandra, DynamoDB, or similar technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with a track record of delivering production‑ready solutions to complex business problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Distributed Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Hands‑on experience with big‑data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Flink, or Hadoop.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Contributions to open‑source projects, especially in the data‑infrastructure space.
  • Experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of performance profiling, latency optimization, and capacity planning for high‑throughput systems.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Excellence: Ability to write clean, maintainable code and to architect systems that scale horizontally.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills for working with cross‑functional teams, including product, data science, and operations.
  • Adaptability: Comfort with rapid iteration, evolving requirements, and a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ownership: Proactive attitude toward taking responsibility for end‑to‑end delivery, from design through production support.
  • Curiosity: Passion for learning new technologies, exploring open‑source ecosystems, and sharing knowledge with peers.
