As a remote‑first organization, arenaflex empowers talent worldwide to collaborate across time zones, fostering a culture where brilliant ideas thrive and impact millions of lives every day.

Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Software Engineer to join our Video Algorithms team on a fully remote basis. In this role, you will design, prototype, and implement next‑generation video encoding algorithms that balance visual fidelity with bandwidth efficiency. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary group of researchers, system engineers, and product teams to translate theoretical breakthroughs into production‑ready software that powers arenaflex’s streaming platform. This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of video compression, collaborate with world‑renowned academic partners, and see your innovations directly improve the viewing experience for a global audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Algorithm Design & Prototyping: Conceptualize and develop novel encoding algorithms that enhance video quality while reducing data transmission requirements.
  • Performance Optimization: Analyze existing codec implementations (e.g., H.264/AVC, HEVC, AV1) to identify bottlenecks and engineer optimizations that improve both speed and compression efficiency.
  • Research Collaboration: Partner with academic research groups, contribute to joint publications, and present findings at industry conferences and internal research forums.
  • Cross‑Functional Integration: Work hand‑in‑hand with software engineers, infrastructure teams, and product managers to integrate algorithmic improvements into arenaflex’s end‑to‑end streaming pipeline.
  • Code Quality & Mentorship: Write clean, maintainable C++/Python code, conduct rigorous code reviews, and mentor junior engineers on best practices in video processing and algorithmic research.
  • Testing & Validation: Develop comprehensive test suites, including objective quality metrics (PSNR, SSIM, VMAF) and subjective user studies, to validate the impact of your work on real‑world streaming scenarios.
  • Open‑Source Contribution: Contribute to key open‑source projects such as FFmpeg, x264, and libav, ensuring that arenaflex remains at the forefront of community‑driven innovation.

Essential Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in video or image processing software development, with a proven track record of delivering high‑impact features.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline; a Master’s or Ph.D. is highly desirable.
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python and C++ (or Java), with experience in low‑level performance tuning and multithreaded development.
  • Deep understanding of video compression standards, including H.264/AVC, HEVC, and emerging codecs such as AV1.
  • Solid foundation in image processing techniques—scaling, de‑interlacing, color space conversion, and artifact detection.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research concepts into production‑ready software, supported by publications, patents, or open‑source contributions.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills, analytical mindset, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications & Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Experience with large‑scale distributed systems and cloud‑based video processing pipelines.
  • Background in performance engineering, including profiling, SIMD optimization, and GPU acceleration.
  • Contributions to open‑source video projects (e.g., FFmpeg, x264, libvpx, WebM) or involvement in standards bodies.
  • Familiarity with video quality assessment tools and methodologies, such as VMAF, SSIM, and subjective testing frameworks.
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques applied to video enhancement (e.g., super‑resolution, denoising).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Excellence: Mastery of algorithmic design, data structures, and software engineering principles.
  • Collaboration: Proven experience working across cross‑functional teams, often across different time zones.
  • Innovation Mindset: Curiosity to explore emerging research, willingness to experiment, and resilience to iterate on ideas.
  • Attention to Detail: Rigorous testing, documentation, and a commitment to delivering production‑grade code.
  • Leadership: Ability to mentor junior engineers, lead technical discussions, and influence roadmap decisions.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At arenaflex, your career trajectory is shaped by the impact you create. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will have direct access to senior leadership, research labs, and a global network of experts. We invest heavily in continuous learning—offering tuition reimbursement for advanced degrees, sponsorship for conference attendance, and internal workshops on topics ranging from advanced codec design to cloud-native video processing. High performers can progress to Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, or Director of Video Engineering roles, with the freedom to define strategic initiatives that shape the future of streaming worldwide.
