Investigative Reporter

Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders who are united by a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. We are seeking like-minded Investigative Reporters to work closely with MI Senior Fellow Christopher Rufo. Reporters will work together with Rufo and the editors at City Journal (CJ) to produce rigorous investigative reporting from multiple angles. Rufo?s team will focus broadly on the capture of U.S. institutions by radical ideologues, the consequences of that capture for the American people, and efforts to reverse it. MI Investigative Reporters will actively shape public debate on matters such as education, medicine, criminal justice, corporate governance, and public governance at the local, state, and federal levels. The ideal candidate is an experienced and team-oriented investigative journalist with a keen interest in public policy and an exceptional ability to communicate their reporting to a wide and influential audience of lawmakers, activists, fellow journalists, and concerned citizens. Required qualifications ? Two-plus years of experience in investigative journalism or similar investigative research role. ? A proven ability to source, investigate, and break significant stories. ? Dogged commitment to accurate reporting of the facts. ? A proven record of rigorous and compelling on-the-ground reporting. ? Strong media presence; comfortable doing TV, radio, and podcast hits in support of reporting. ? High degree of social media proficiency; capable of building a large audience for the team?s reporting and enhancing the reputation of CJ and MI. ? Willingness to travel as appropriate to events and hearings, conduct on-the-ground reporting, and interview potential sources. ? Team-oriented approach to reporting; a willingness to share by-lines and research and reporting with colleagues, working with direction from Rufo and CJ editors. ? Significant familiarity with the work of Rufo, CJ, and MI, and a desire to work in support of MI?s mission. ? Bachelor?s degree. Candidates will be considered for remote positions as well as positions working out of MI?s Manhattan office. Financial support is available for new hires moving to New York City. Investigative Reporters will be expected to travel for their reporting and related media opportunities, as well as for MI events.
