Role Description

As the Director of Technology Architecture at BECU, you’ll do more than lead a team—you’ll help shape the future of how our credit union delivers meaningful technology to our members.

  • Lead and Grow a High-Performing Team: Coach, mentor, and empower a team of architects—providing regular feedback and support through timely performance reviews and development plans.
  • Architect for Performance and Scale: Create and continuously evolve architectural designs that enhance our software delivery, operational efficiency, and core banking modernization—aligned to business goals and best practices.
  • Champion Strategic Alignment: Ensure that all architecture follows BECU’s standards and principles while enabling fast, flexible delivery in a modern DevOps model.
  • Drive Integration and Interoperability: Develop and govern enterprise integration strategies, including APIs, messaging, and service orchestration to ensure seamless connectivity between systems—including core banking, digital channels, and third-party platforms.
  • Promote Security and Risk Transparency: Bring visibility to cybersecurity and operational risks related to architecture, ensuring stakeholders are informed and aligned.
  • Inspire a Digital Mindset: Advocate for the use of digital technology, reference architectures, and reusable patterns—sparking innovation across teams.
  • Understand the Business You Serve: Build deep awareness of BECU’s business drivers, members’ needs, and market landscape to inform sound architectural decisions—particularly in the context of core financial systems and integrations.
  • Accelerate Delivery and Governance: Develop processes that enhance performance metrics, delivery capabilities, and governance models across the tech org.
  • Explore What’s Next: Stay on top of emerging trends and technologies, assessing their relevance and helping senior leadership explore new opportunities—especially in core banking and fintech integration ecosystems.
  • Enhance Quality with Feedback: Build reliable mechanisms for continuous feedback to improve delivery support and architectural service quality.
  • Be a Voice in Technology Governance: Join leadership forums, planning sessions, and strategic initiative reviews that shape the tech roadmap at BECU.
  • Jump in Where Needed: Tackle additional responsibilities and special projects that align with the mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Technology Management, or related field
  • 7+ years of people leadership experience, including leading technology teams
  • 8+ years of experience in solution design and implementation for large, strategic projects
  • Demonstrated expertise in application design and integration architecture, including APIs and data interoperability
  • Experience in architecture practices, processes, and frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, Sabsa)
  • Proven leadership in both team building and technology direction
  • Strong planning, collaboration, and negotiation skills at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Familiarity with core banking systems, cloud-native security, and architecture concepts (e.g., Microservices, IAM, CI/CD, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS)

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a related field
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks
  • Exposure to financial services or credit union environments
  • Familiarity with security/risk management frameworks (e.g., NIST, COBIT, ISO 27001, ITIL)
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities
