Teaching Artist - Empowering NYC Youth through Creative Mentorship

Job Summary:

Join our dynamic team as a Teaching Artist in New York City, NY, and play a vital role in shaping the lives of urban youth through innovative mentorship and facilitation. As a key member of our organization, The Leadership Program, you will bring your expertise and passion to multiple NYC schools, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages growth, creativity, and social-emotional learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently implement programming in challenging NYC public schools, serving as a mentor and positive role model for students.
  • Recruit and retain students as needed, utilizing creative strategies to engage and motivate.
  • Learn and apply our unique student-centered approach, leveraging your background to plan and deliver after-school programming.
  • Collaborate with students, community members, and staff on special projects and activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Manage classroom dynamics, ensuring a safe and productive environment for all participants.
  • Maintain accurate records, submitting paperwork and entering data into our online database bi-weekly.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., education, arts, or humanities).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in NYC public schools or equivalent settings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with experience in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks a plus.
  • Technological proficiency, including virtual facilitation tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet).
  • Experience in Anti-Racist Education and Restorative Justice is highly valued.
  • Fingerprinting through the State Department of Education is required.
  • Backgrounds in martial arts, athletics, multimedia, chess, dance, or multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Creole, Bengali) are highly desirable.
